Bat Box Checks 26/10/2025
On the 26th of October, we carried out the final bat box check of the year. It was a fantastic day, with both brown long-eared bats (BLE) and a soprano pipistrelle being found. In the image on the left, you can see one of our ecologists, Ruben, handling the soprano pipistrelle. It was weighed to ensure it was in healthy condition before being carefully returned to its original bat box.

It can be challenging to distinguish a female soprano pipistrelle from a female common pipistrelle. Males are easier to tell apart, as common pipistrelles have grey reproductive organs, whereas sopranos have more yellow/orange ones. One way to distinguish between females is by looking at the face and head shape, soprano pipistrelles often have a lighter face and a rounder head (similar to a pug), while common pipistrelles tend to have darker faces and a slightly more fox-like appearance.
